Ternua Redcycle: from fishing nets to outdoor clothing
Ternua's Redcycle project is a good example of how companies can combine innovation and sustainability to create high-quality products that benefit both us humans and the planet. We introduce you to the brand's project in more detail and explain how marine waste is turned into quality outdoor clothing.
Sustainability as part of the brand DNA
The Spanish outdoor brand Ternua has been committed to sustainability since its foundation in 1994. The goal is to produce high-quality outdoor clothing while minimising the impact on the environment.
Ternua's commitment is evident in every aspect of the company's management: from the materials used to development and production.
As a result, Ternua has launched a wide range of projects to maximise the sustainability of its clothing. One such project is Colorcycle in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Gipuzkoa Association of Cider Houses and Archroma, which promotes the natural dyeing of garments by using agricultural waste such as walnut shells, olives, or chestnut shells as the basis of the colors. Other projects include Seacycle, through which the brand contributes to cleaning up the oceans, and Wearcycle, which promotes a circular economy by making garments and accessories from discarded materials.

Fishing nets become yarn
We would like to introduce you to one Ternua project in detail. As part of Redcycle, discarded fishing nets and other marine waste are collected, recycled and then turned into jackets, trousers, backpacks and other outdoor products.
In this way, Ternua is directly addressing two major environmental issues: ocean pollution and over-consumption of resources. The amount of waste in our oceans and waterways is reduced and Ternua can rely on renewable materials.
How the Redcycle system works
Together with a network of partners in the Spanish fishing industry, Ternua collects marine debris from the waters in the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biskaia in Bermeo, Getraria and Hondarribia.
Everything is then transported to Slovenia, where it is prepared for the next step, decomposed and cleaned. In an innovative process, the waste is transformed into ECONYL® yarn, which is supplied to Ternua's fabric manufacturers. The regenerated nylon yarn offers all the advantages of regular nylon.
The garments are produced in Mondragón before the environmentally friendly jackets, trousers or backpacks accompany you on your outdoor adventures. Best of all: the outdoor items are not only recycled, but also recyclable themselves.
