Salewa

From Munich to the Alps
SALEWA represents a passion for alpinism and the unique adventure of the mountains. Founded in 1935 as 'SAttler- und LEder WAren' (Saddler and Leather Goods), or SALEWA, the Munich-based company of Josef Liebhart initially sold mainly camera bags. Leather footballs and motorcycle tank bags were also part of the range. In the 1940s, ski poles made of hazelnut wood were added.
Today, the management-led family business is firmly rooted in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. At its headquarters in Bolzano, technical equipment is developed that combines traditional materials with progressive design – always adhering to high environmental and social standards with a deep awareness of regionality, quality, and value.
SALEWA believes in people who live life to the fullest, seek new challenges, and pursue their dreams. It’s not just about the destination but also about the journey – a philosophy encapsulated by #PureMountain.

Alpine Hemp Technology
Climbing challenges both body and mind. It strengthens muscles, enhances concentration and coordination, and requires mental resilience. This durability is reflected in hemp, which SALEWA has been using in its climbing collection Alpine Hemp since 2017.
The choice of hemp is based on its unique properties: The material is soft, elastic, breathable, thermoregulating, and highly comfortable. It is more durable and breathable than cotton, absorbs moisture without feeling damp, protects against UV radiation, and has antibacterial properties.
Alpine Hemp is an innovative hybrid fabric developed in close collaboration with suppliers. Through specialized weaving and knitting techniques, combined with recycled polyester and elastane, a particularly abrasion-resistant and elastic material is created – perfect for the demands of climbing. The collection includes versatile garments that provide cooling, warmth, or protection depending on the need, ensuring optimal support for climbers in every challenge.
Tirolwool® Celliant®
The robust wool of Tyrolean mountain sheep – cleverly combined with the mineral fiber Celliant® – creates a clothing line that provides excellent insulation and reliable warmth through resilient natural materials and hybrid technologies.
Especially in autumn and winter, short breaks during strenuous mountain activities are critical for individual heat regulation. In fast-paced mountain sports, intense activity phases alternate with rest periods. A damp, cold feeling due to heavy perspiration increases the risk of cooling down quickly.
For SALEWA, the right balance between insulation and breathability is essential. Wool keeps mountaineers warm even when wet and naturally regulates body temperature. Celliant® is a patented blend of 13 thermoreactive minerals embedded in recycled polyester fibers. This technology has the unique ability to convert body heat into infrared light, store it, and return it to the body over an extended period. The result: improved blood circulation and faster recovery – a crucial advantage in the mountains.

Sustainability
SALEWA follows a comprehensive sustainability approach to offer high-quality, long-lasting mountaineering products while minimizing its ecological footprint. As a family business, the brand always makes decisions with the future in mind. It’s not just about today but also about the world left for future generations. Sustainability is a conscious investment because the company firmly believes that responsible action is the key to a better future.
Responsible action is crucial for the company belonging to the South Tyrol-based Oberalp Group, which also includes brands like Dynafit and Wild Country.
But what truly defines a modern, sustainable brand? More than just promises are needed. The brand is characterized by clear principles:
SALEWA takes responsibility along the entire supply chain and actively advocates for sustainable production processes. The company continuously analyzes the impact of its business activities on the environment and systematically prioritizes risks to promote sustainable solutions. Furthermore, SALEWA is committed to fair working conditions and holds leader status in the Fair Wear Foundation, guaranteeing the highest standards of social responsibility.

These factors have established SALEWA as a brand that not only develops highly functional products but also leads with a clear ecological consciousness.
For them, product longevity is a matter of honor. Mountaineers should be able to use their products for years – ideally, a lifetime. That’s why the company operates its own care and repair workshops in Bolzano and Kiefersfelden and provides partners with spare parts and repair instructions.
Animal welfare is also a top priority: SALEWA adheres to the strictest known animal welfare regulations for down production and follows the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) to ensure sustainable and ethical production. With this, the brand sets a strong example for a responsible future in the outdoor industry.
