G-1000: the fabric
G-1000 is a densely woven fabric of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, with no membrane. You control how much wind and wet it keeps out with Greenland Wax: more wax for wet autumn days, less for summer.
Care: re-waxing
Apply the wax thinly. Melt it in with heat: an iron on a low to medium setting, or a hairdryer. According to Fjällräven, the wax melts at 55 to 60 °C.
Fjällräven trousers come in EU sizes. According to the size chart, your lower hip measurement is what counts. If your waist is larger than the chart gives for that size, choose the size by your waist.
Waxing G-1000 in three steps
In just over a minute, Fjällräven shows how to apply Greenland Wax: apply, melt in with heat, repeat. According to Fjällräven, more wax makes the fabric more wind- and water-repellent.
Frequently asked questions
Is G-1000 waterproof?
No. According to Fjällräven, Greenland Wax makes G-1000 more water-repellent, but not waterproof. In persistent rain, wear a rain jacket or waterproof trousers over it.
How often do I need to re-wax?
According to Fjällräven, the wax has largely washed out after two to three washes. Re-wax sooner if rain no longer beads off but leaves dark patches.
How do I wash G-1000?
As rarely as possible. Fjällräven gives 40 °C as the maximum and recommends 30 °C. For blended fabrics, follow the care label.
What is the Kånken designed for?
For everyday use, school and travel. It holds 16 litres. For heavy loads over longer distances, a trekking backpack with a hip belt is the better choice.
What does the name Fjällräven mean?
Fjällräven is Swedish for Arctic fox. The fox also appears in the logo.
The Kånken arrived in 1978 as a school backpack for Swedish children. You carry it as a backpack or by the handles as a bag, and the seat pad in the back pocket is removable.
The Greenland Jacket has been around since 1968. It is made of G-1000 and designed for everyday wear and leisure. You control how much weather it keeps out with Greenland Wax.
The Vidda Pro is the G-1000 trekking trouser, reinforced at the knees and seat. It comes in three leg lengths, plus a ventilated and a lighter version.
