Bolts are used in different areas of mountaineering, climbing and also on expeditions. They are anchored in a previously drilled hole and serve as a fixed point or intermediate belay. Compared to mechanical systems, which are driven in and anchored in the rock by expansion, composite pitons are used with mortar, which seals the drilled hole against moisture and prevents erosion. The advantage of mechanical pitons is that they are ready for immediate use, while composite pitons are considered the safest rock pitons when set professionally.
