Bach
An Irish-Swiss cooperation
Bach was founded in the 70s in Kilkenny, Ireland. As "The Great BACH Packing and Construction Company" the company started the production of the first backpacks with outer frame, inspired by the American Camp Trails backpacks. It became innovative in the 80s with the development of the Orthoflex back system, a fully adjustable inner frame backpack.
When Bach went bankrupt in 1989, the Swiss outdoor and travel company Transa came into play. The Swiss had already worked with the backpack manufacturer in previous years and now, together with mountain guide Martin Wiesmann, among others, took over the company in Kilkenny with its employees, factory building and warehouse. But also for the new "TransBach Ltd" the beginning was bumpy. However, the fact that success was limited in the first few years did not prevent Bach from continuing to develop new products.
Backpacks with passion
The passion for backpacks and the stamina paid off. After the sales figures grew slowly in the 90s, they continued to rise in the 2000s. To meet the increasing demand, Bach therefore set up a second production facility in Vietnam.
In 2006 Martin returned to Switzerland with his wife. Since then, the Bach Backpack lab and design studio has also been located there near Zurich. The workshop in Wiesendangen near Winterthur continues to develop new Bach products to this day. In order to be able to correct small mistakes quickly, the first series is also produced here whenever possible. The location in Kilkenny also remained in place. Here, individual products are still sewn and small series are produced.
Light, durable and clever
Bach offers robust, comfortable and well thought-out backpack solutions for numerous applications. In addition to trekking and alpine backpacks, luggage is also part of the range. Three aspects play an important role in the production: carrying comfort, weight and durability.
In order to keep the backpacks as light as possible, Bach focuses on an efficient and well thought-out design. Without any frills, the products are only equipped with those elements that are really necessary - of course without sacrificing functionality. The robust Cordura fabric makes the material of the backpacks resistant to tearing and abrasion. With the Weatherproof line, Bach also produces particularly weatherproof products.
Ingenious back systems are precisely adapted to the use of the different models. For trekking backpacks, there are also special fits for women. The women's models have slightly shorter hip and narrower shoulder straps. In addition, the straps are more strongly contoured to better fit the female body shape.
Another aspect that is taken into account during production is sustainability. This is why the backpacks are particularly durable and can be easily repaired if necessary. Furthermore, Bach only uses materials certified by the bluesign environmental label in production. In addition, the rules of the Ethical Trade Initiative, which create fair working conditions, apply in the production facilities in Europe and Vietnam.
