Wool jackets come as flexible knits, in dense boiled wool that keeps out more draught, and lined for colder days. Wool content differs from one model to the next and is listed with each product.
Guide
Wool jackets
Construction matters in a wool jacket: knit is flexible, while dense felted fabric gives more shelter from draughts. Check wool content and the inner surface over your intended clothing.
Key points
Distinguish knit, felted fabric and lined designs by the weather.
Check wool content and blends on the individual model.
Reach forwards to check shoulder room and sleeve length.
WhyWool content alone cannot predict your personal comfort against skin.
How much wool is included?
In briefRead the fabric list
WhyBlends can change stretch, weight and feel; the product name is not enough.
Can you move freely?
In briefStretch your arms forwards
WhyDense fabric should not pull at the shoulders or draw sleeves up past your wrists.
Frequently asked questions
Does wool protect against rain?
Wool alone is not complete rain protection. Add a suitable outer layer for prolonged wet weather and check any specific weather protection stated for the model.
How do felted fabric and knit differ?
Felted fabric has a compacted surface; a knitted structure can be more open depending on the stitches. Feel and airflow differ, and an added lining can change both.
Can it go in the washing machine?
Only when the care label permits it, including for wool blends. Devold advises following the individual label and its drying instructions.
How should it dry after washing?
Woolmark generally recommends drying wool jumpers flat unless the care label permits another suitable method. Avoid hanging heavy wet knitwear on a coat hanger.
How much does an example weigh?
For example, Salewa lists Salewa Fanes Sarner Light Jacket M at 665 g. Compare weight figures only when their reference sizes match.
How do I check the fit?
Check shoulder width and sleeve length before the room at your waist and hem. Reach forwards as if holding walking poles, then sit down. Sizing up does not reliably fix a short back length; compare cuts when needed.
Soft knit and comfortable collar. Open stitches allow wind through. Check the individual model description and try the combination with your intended kit.
