What some people probably don't know: Many waterproof garments pose a danger to us and our environment. This is because mackintoshes, for example, are often treated with PFAS for better water and dirt repellency.

But what does PFAS actually mean?

PFAS are poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances - chemicals that do not occur naturally in the environment. Thus, they cannot be degraded naturally, are carcinogenic and also have negative effects on the immune and reproductive systems of humans and animals.

The special thing about Houdini shells: they are made with sustainable technology and are therefore completely PFAS-free.

Houdini's clean alternative

The Swedish sports company Houdini has been deeply connected to nature since its foundation. Not least for this reason, circular functional materials are used to manufacture all Houdini shells, which are never treated with harmful PFAS or other toxic chemicals.

As early as 2012, Houdini started the process of eliminating PFAS from all collections. Since 2018, the hazardous chemicals are no longer used at all. Instead, Houdini presents Atmos, a PFAS-free membrane, as well as a bio-based water-repellent coating from Organotex, which is also free of PFAS.

Another advantage of Houdini clothing: Only fully recycled and recyclable fabrics are used in production to prevent additional textile waste. By developing particularly durable clothing, Houdini tries to counteract "fast fashion", i.e. the unnecessary waste of clothing.
