WhySizes such as 128 or 140 give your child's height in centimetres. One size up leaves room for a jumper; much bigger gets in the way of play.
Down or synthetic?
In shortWet weather decides
WhyDown is warm for very little weight. Wet, it goes flat, while synthetic fill keeps more of its warmth and dries faster.
What does 90/10 mean?
In shortDown to feathers
Why90/10 means 90 per cent down and 10 per cent feathers. More down lofts better and is warmer for the same weight.
Where should reflectors go?
In shortFront, back, sleeves
WhyOn dark school runs, children are seen sooner when reflectors catch the light from the front, the back and on the sleeves.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child keep the jacket on in a car seat?
Better not. Take thick winter coats off in a car seat, because the harness can't sit snugly over them. Lay the jacket over your child like a blanket until the car warms up.
Can I wash a kids' down jacket?
Usually yes: follow the care label and use a down wash on a gentle cycle. Then tumble dry on low with two or three dryer balls until no clumps are left.
What goes underneath?
A long-sleeved top and a jumper are usually enough. Feel the back of the neck: if it's sweaty, it's too much. If it's cool, add a layer.
Down jacket or ski jacket for ski school?
Usually the ski jacket. It's waterproof, has a snow skirt and copes with a whole day in the snow. A down jacket without a waterproof shell gets wet from falls and sitting in the snow.
