Wide, Narrow, Bunion and more

At Hanwag, the name tells you the last. Wide is roomier at the forefoot and ball, Narrow slightly snugger for slim feet. Bunion gives the big toe joint more room for people with hallux valgus. SF Extra gives the big toe room to point straight ahead.

Double-stitched or cemented

Hanwag uses three construction methods. On double-stitched boots like the Tashi, two seams join the upper and sole; on cemented ones, the upper is bonded to the insole. According to Hanwag, both can be resoled. Direct injection moulds the midsole on and makes the shoe light.

Finding the right size

Hanwag uses UK and EU sizes, which is why there are in-between sizes such as 41.5. UK 8 corresponds to EU 42 and, according to the size chart, a foot length of 264 mm. Leave almost a finger's width in front of your toes so they don't hit the front on descents.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lady mean in the model name?

Lady marks the women's model. Hanwag builds it on its own women's last, which is why many shoes come in two versions, such as Banks GTX and Banks Lady GTX.

How snug should an approach shoe fit?

Snugger than a hiking boot. According to Hanwag, a climbing boot or approach shoe should fit closely and not be too long, because on rock direct contact matters more than comfort on the descent.

Should mountain boots be a bit bigger?

Better to leave a little room at the front. According to Hanwag, stiff alpine boots must not be tight around the toes, to prevent frostbite. For light textile shoes, Hanwag advises also trying on half a size larger for comparison.

Do double-stitched boots need a long break-in?

Hardly at all these days. According to Hanwag, padding foams and soft lining leathers mean that double-stitched boots need only a short break-in period, sometimes none at all.

Which Hanwag boots work with snowshoes?

Banks Snow GTX and Alaska Winter GTX have a snowshoe ledge at the heel. According to Hanwag, the strap attaches there quickly, and a loop guide helps prevent pressure points.
