Guide

Coats & Parkas

A coat earns its place on cold commutes when it covers your seat and lets you move. Choose insulation for the time you spend waiting, then check rain protection.

Key points

  • Length keeps you warm when waiting and sitting.
  • In rain the fill needs sealed protection.
  • A two-way zip keeps long models easy to move in.

Types compared

  • Down coat (Dry cold)

    The North Face Arctic Parka

Warm insulation for cold days with little movement. Check the outer fabric separately: a down filling does not make a coat waterproof.

    • Advantage: Warmth for its weight
    • Drawback: Careful drying needed
  • Synthetic parka (Changeable weather)

    Fjällräven Nuuk

A practical alternative for damp commutes. The lining, hem and collar should leave room for a jumper without letting draughts in.

    • Advantage: Insulation for everyday wear
    • Drawback: Bulkier when packed

What to check before buying

QuestionIn briefWhy
How long?In briefTry it while seatedWhyThe hem must cover your lower back without pulling across your thighs. On a bike, check that you can pedal freely.
Which hood?In briefClear view when turningWhyAdjust it with the collar closed. The hood should follow your head instead of blocking your view at a junction.
Which size?In briefTry it over work clothesWhyReach forwards and raise your arms. Shoulders must stay free and the cuffs should not slide far up your forearms.
What about rain?In briefCheck seams and fabricWhyA water-repellent finish handles short showers. For a long wet commute, look for waterproof construction with sealed seams.

Frequently asked questions

Is a longer coat always warmer?

It covers more of your body, but warmth also depends on the filling, wind protection and fit. Too tight a cut compresses the layers underneath. Try sitting down before choosing the length.

Can I cycle in it?

Check the hem, shoulder room and side view through the hood. A long coat must leave room for pedalling; a zip that opens from below can help. Keep loose fabric away from moving parts.

Does a water-repellent jacket keep out steady rain?

A finish makes drops bead up but does not seal the seams. For prolonged rain, choose a waterproof outer fabric with sealed seams. Check the product description for the complete construction.

How do I wash the jacket?

Follow the care label for the outer fabric and filling. Close zips and avoid fabric softener when the label requires it. Only use a tumble dryer if the label permits; dry filled jackets completely before storing them.
