The faster you run, the thinner the jacket. For steady rain, you'll want a membrane.

Men's Running Jackets

Men's cuts are usually straighter and longer in the body. Nothing should pull at the shoulders as your arms swing, and the sleeves should keep your wrists covered on the move.

Key points

  • Most runs: a thin windproof with a water-repellent finish.
  • Steady rain and trail races: membrane, taped seams and a hood.
  • In winter the shell blocks the wind; the layer underneath keeps you warm.
  • Sleeves long enough for your arm swing, hem staying over your waistband.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
Which size?In shortChest and arm lengthWhyCheck chest and sleeve length against the brand's chart. If a layer goes underneath in winter, go up a size when unsure.
Waterproof or water-resistant?In shortResistant is usually fineWhyWater-resistant jackets cope with drizzle and let more vapour out. A membrane pays off in steady rain or when a race requires it.
Close or relaxed fit?In shortDepends on what's under itWhyA close fit doesn't flap and chafes less. If a fleece goes underneath in winter, a relaxed cut is more comfortable.
Does pack size matter? In shortSmall comes alongWhyA jacket that stuffs into a waist belt or vest can come off as soon as you warm up, and it's with you when the weather turns.

Frequently asked questions

What do trail races require?

Usually a waterproof jacket with a hood and taped seams, sometimes with a minimum hydrostatic head. The race regulations decide. A windproof generally won't meet the rule.

Why am I wet inside my rain jacket?

Running produces more sweat than a membrane can move out, so no rain jacket keeps you fully dry. Open the zip a little and use any back vents.

Jacket or gilet?

A gilet warms chest and stomach and leaves your arms free. It's enough if you only feel cold for the first few kilometres. For rain and headwinds on long runs, take the jacket.

How do I care for it?

Follow the care label: liquid detergent, no fabric softener, zips closed. When water stops beading, use a wash-in or spray-on proofer.

What goes underneath in winter?

A long-sleeve top in synthetic or merino, plus a thin midlayer in frost. Cotton soaks up sweat and chills you. Start out slightly cold; you'll warm up within minutes.
