Not automatically. Some designs have an added barrier or a denser outer face. Classic open fleece needs an outer layer for exposed, windy sections.

It should sit beneath your jacket without large folds but allow free movement at the shoulders and underarms. Try it with the base layer you actually use.

It may be enough at a steady pace. A full zip opens further and is easier to take off when the weather or your effort changes.

Follow the care label and close zips before washing. Wear under rucksack straps also depends on the outer face: softness alone does not establish abrasion resistance.

Check shoulder width and sleeve length before the room at your waist and hem. Reach forwards as if holding walking poles, then sit down. Sizing up does not reliably fix a short back length; compare cuts when needed.
