Long lift rides call for more down, and lots of wet snow for a tightly woven outer. Start the advisor ›

Men's Down Ski Jackets
A down ski jacket is the warmest option for cold days on the piste. To stay that way, it has to keep snow and meltwater off the down and let heat out when you ski hard.
Key points
Fill weight first: it sets the warmth. Fill power in cuin tells you how well it lofts.
A membrane outer, or synthetic panels on shoulders and arms, keeps wet snow out.
Snow skirt, a ski pass pocket on the sleeve and a hood that fits over your helmet.
Wet down barely insulates. Where wet snow is common, synthetic fill is safer.

Question
In short
Why
Fill weight or fill power?
In shortFill weight first
WhyThe grams of down decide how warm the jacket is. Fill power in cuin shows how much the down lofts, in other words how light that warmth is.
Down or synthetic?
In shortDown for dry cold
WhyDown gives more warmth for its weight but loses loft when wet. Synthetic keeps insulating when damp and is heavier for the same warmth.
Stitched or box-wall?
In shortBox walls run warmer
WhyWhere a seam is stitched through both layers there is no down, so the cold gets in. Box-wall baffles keep down between the fabrics right across the seam.
Which size?
In shortTry it with a midlayer
WhyWear what you ski in underneath and raise your arms. The hem must not ride up over your waistband, nor the cuffs off your wrists.
Frequently asked questions
Is a down ski jacket waterproof?
Only if the outer has a membrane and sealed seams. Many are water-repellent, which is fine for dry powder but not for a whole day in wet snow.
What does 90/10 on the label mean?
90 per cent down clusters, 10 per cent feathers. Feathers give structure, down gives warmth. The higher the down share, the lighter and loftier the fill.
How do I wash it?
Follow the care label: usually a gentle cycle with a down wash. Then tumble dry on low heat with a few dryer balls, if the label allows, until no clumps remain.
What does the RDS label mean?
The Responsible Down Standard rules out live-plucking and force-feeding and tracks the down from farm to finished jacket.
Won't I overheat while skiing?
Rarely in frost. On sunny days with fast runs you might. Then underarm vents or a lighter fill help, with a thin base layer underneath instead of fleece.
