Backcountry Ski Jackets

For powder, you need a backcountry ski jacket rated to at least 20,000 mm, with fully taped seams, a snow skirt and underarm vents. Warmth comes from the mid-layer underneath.

Key points

  • Powder: 20,000 mm and fully taped seams.
  • The mid-layer under the shell manages warmth.
  • Off-piste: check the avalanche bulletin, carry a transceiver.

What to look for when buying

QuestionIn briefWhy
What waterproof rating does it need?In brief20,000 mm or moreWhyIn powder you end up in the snow now and then, and wet snow presses water into the fabric. 20,000 mm and fully taped seams keep you dry.
3-layer or 2-layer?In brief3-layer off-pisteWhyIn a 3-layer jacket, face fabric, membrane and inner fabric are bonded into one. It is light and easy to layer.
How breathable should it be?In briefRET below 13WhyRET measures how much a fabric resists water vapour. Up to 6 counts as very good, 6 to 13 as good.

Frequently asked questions

How is a backcountry jacket different from a ski jacket?

A backcountry ski jacket is usually longer and looser, built as an unlined shell.

Does a RECCO reflector replace an avalanche transceiver?

No. Only rescue teams with a RECCO detector can locate the passive reflector. Your companions cannot.

Can I wear a backcountry jacket for ski touring?

For short climbs, yes, if it has vent zips. For long ascents it is usually too heavy and too warm. A light ski touring jacket suits that better.

How do I care for a backcountry ski jacket?

Wash it at 40 °C with a little liquid detergent and no fabric softener, unless the care label says otherwise.
