Guide

Women's Long-Sleeve Run Tops

A rule of thumb: dress as if it were ten degrees warmer. Your body heats up within minutes, and a long-sleeve top layers neatly under a gilet or jacket.

Key points

Synthetic or merino, never cotton: it soaks up sweat and chills you.
Thin for cool days, a brushed lining for frost.
Flat seams under the arms, or long runs will chafe.
A zip at the collar lets you vent when you pick up the pace.

What to look for

Question	In short	Why
Merino or synthetic?	In shortSynthetic dries faster	WhyPolyester moves sweat quickly and dries fast. Merino stays warm when damp and smells less, but dries more slowly and needs more care.
Close or loose fit?	In shortClose to the skin	WhyFabric touching the skin picks up sweat directly. A looser cut is fine when the top is your outer layer.
Which size?	In shortCheck sleeves mid-stride	WhyWith your arms bent, the sleeves should cover your wrists. Women's and men's cuts differ at the shoulders and waist, and so do the brands' charts.
Half-zip or crew neck?	In shortHalf-zip adjusts warmth	WhyOpen the zip on a climb, close it into a headwind. A crew neck lies flatter under a jacket.

Frequently asked questions

At what temperature should I switch to long sleeves?

There is no fixed point. Pace, wind and how you feel the cold decide. On an easy run in the wind you will feel cold sooner than during intervals at the same temperature. If unsure, take a thin long-sleeve top and push the sleeves up.

How do I wash merino?

Unless the label says otherwise, on a wool cycle at 30 °C at most, with wool detergent and no fabric softener. Dry it flat, not in a tumble dryer. Often an airing after the run is enough.

Why does my running top still smell after washing?

Odour gets trapped in synthetic fibres. Wash the top soon after your run, inside out and without fabric softener, which coats the fibres. Do not leave wet tops in the laundry basket.

Do I need a jacket as well?

In wind or rain, yes. A long-sleeve top keeps you warm but stops neither wind nor water. A thin windproof on top does the job and stuffs into a pocket when you do not need it.

What are thumb loops for?

They keep the sleeve over your wrist and warm the back of your hand. On cold days they will not replace gloves, but they close the gap between sleeve and glove.
