Women’s Freeski Jackets

A women’s freeski jacket is a tough shell with room for layers. Women’s cuts usually have narrower shoulders and more room at the hips, so the hem and snow skirt sit properly.

Key points

  • For powder: a shell rated 20,000 mm or more, fully taped seams and a snow skirt.
  • Room for a midlayer without pulling across the chest.
  • The hem stays over your waistband, even with arms raised or in a crouch.
  • Pit zips, a hood that fits a helmet, pockets clear of your pack straps.

Women’s or unisex cut?In shortTry bothWhyWomen’s models are usually shorter in the body and narrower at the shoulders. With broad shoulders or a long torso, a unisex model sometimes fits better.

Frequently asked questions

Do women’s sizes run differently?

It depends on the brand. Check chest and hip measurements against the size chart, and back length if it is given. If you are between sizes, go up: layers go underneath.

Do I need an insulated freeski jacket?

Rarely. An unlined shell is more versatile: on cold days a warm midlayer goes underneath, on the climb it stays in your pack. If you sit on lifts a lot and feel the cold, an insulated version can make sense.

What is the snow skirt for?

The elastic band inside the hem closes round your hips, so snow stays out when you fall or carve deep turns. On some models it detaches or links to the trousers.

How do I keep it waterproof?

Wash it with a technical detergent and no softener. If water no longer beads, a warm tumble or a proofing spray refreshes the finish, if the care label allows.
