A seat pad goes against the skin; adding a second pad on top is too much.
Guide
Cycling Underwear
Cycling underwear has two different jobs: padded undershorts for the saddle and technical tops for sweat and warmth. Not every item in this range contains a seat pad.
Key points
Wear padded cycling undershorts directly against the skin.
Do not add a second seat pad under already padded cycling shorts.
A base-layer top should fit closely without restricting breathing or arm movement.
Bear in mindThe pad should stay steady beneath your seat, with room for the outer shorts.
Warm rides
ChooseThin technical vest
Bear in mindLight fabric sits against the skin and passes moisture towards the next layer.
Cool rides
ChooseLong-sleeved base layer
Bear in mindMatch warmth to effort. A wind-protective top has a different job from open mesh.
Longer tours with merino
ChooseSuitable merino top or bottom
Bear in mindChoose the cut for the relevant body area; fibre alone says nothing about padding.
What to look for
Question
In brief
Why
Is there a seat pad?
In briefRead the details
WhyBoxers and technical briefs are not automatically padded. Cycling underwear also includes tops.
Which pad?
In briefConsider riding position
WhyUpright and forward-leaning positions load different areas. Read the intended use rather than simply choosing maximum thickness.
How should undershorts fit?
In briefThe pad stays steady
WhyFolds or a moving pad can rub. The waistband should not press uncomfortably beneath your outer shorts.
Which top?
In briefConsider warmth and sweat
WhyThin mesh suits warm, active rides; denser long sleeves suit cooler days. Match it with your jersey and jacket.
Common questions
Do I wear briefs under padded undershorts?
Padded cycling undershorts are designed for direct skin contact. Extra underwear adds seams between skin and pad and can rub. Follow the specific garment instructions too.
Can I wear them under padded cycling shorts?
A second pad is unnecessary. Overlapping pads change the fit and can fold. Padded liners are mainly intended for unpadded outer shorts.
Does every technical boxer have a pad?
No. Many boxers and briefs are ordinary technical underwear without saddle padding. Check for an explicit pad specification in the product details.
How often should I wash them?
After sweaty use, clean according to the care label and let them dry completely. Pads need careful care; fabric softener and high heat are not approved for every material.
