Ski Tuning

Waxed skis glide better and turn more easily, sharp edges give grip on hard snow. You decide how much you do yourself: liquid wax in between, hot wax for longer-lasting results, edges only with the right tools.

What do I need for ski tuning?

A grey, dry base needs wax. Many skiers wax every three to five ski days. Liquid wax lasts less long than hot wax.

  • Which wax is right?

Waxes are grouped by snow temperature, often by colour. A universal wax covers a wide range and is enough for most recreational skiers.

  • What do I need for hot waxing?

A waxing iron with adjustable temperature, a plexiglass scraper and a brush. A household iron does not hold the temperature precisely enough.

Many piste skis leave the factory with 88 to 89 degrees on the side edge. Sharpen to the angle the manufacturer gives. A different angle changes how the ski grips.

Key points

  • A grey base means it is time for wax.
  • Universal wax covers most ski days.
  • Sharpen edges only to the manufacturer's angle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wax with a household iron?

Better not. A waxing iron holds the temperature precisely and has a thick plate. A household iron heats unevenly and can damage the base.

Do I have to clean the base before waxing?

Yes, dirt and old wax should come off. Use base cleaner and cleaning paper. Let the base dry before applying new wax.

What do I do about scratches in the base?

Small scratches are normal. Take deep gouges down to the core to a ski service, where the base is repaired or ground.

Is there wax without fluorine?

Yes. FIS banned fluorinated waxes from its races from the 2023/24 season. Fluorine-free waxes are available for recreational skiers; the pack says whether a wax is fluorine-free.
