Innovation for over more than 100 years

Shozaburo Shimano founded his own company in Sakai City, Osaka Japan in 1921. The small ironworks initially produced bicycle freewheelers. In the1950s the production of bicycle parts was expanded with the acquisition of Shimano Bicycle. Still unknown in Europe, the first factory was opened in 1972 with headquarters in Düsseldorf.

In the 80s, cycling became increasingly popular in Germany as well, and Shimano became one of the most important manufacturers with its innovative gears, brakes, and pedals. Since 1988, Shimano first started with racing shoes, later mountain bike shoes were also designed.

Protect what matters most to us

When it comes to sustainability, Shimano is working on several fronts: shoe boxes and eyewear packaging largely avoid plastic and use eco-friendly paper with reduced ink instead.

Together with Treedom, Shimano has already planted over 8,200 trees, around 3,330 of them in Madagascar and 2,420 in Guatemala, together absorbing roughly 1,265 tons of CO2.
