Outdoor Polo Shirts

A polo collar says little about how a shirt handles sweat. Fabric matters on active walks; soft feel and a comfortable collar can matter more on quieter days.

Key points

  • Choose quick-drying fabric for sweaty walks.
  • Piqué is a fabric structure and can use cotton or synthetic fibres.
  • The placket and collar should not press beneath a rucksack.

Synthetic or cotton?

  • Technical polo (For active days)

Light synthetic fabrics dry quickly and suit walks where you sweat heavily.

    • Advantage: Dries sooner after getting damp
    • Drawback: Different feel from cotton
  • Cotton polo (For quieter days)

    Fjällräven Övik Polo

A soft polo for everyday use and light activity. Read the fibre proportions before choosing.

    • Advantage: Familiar soft feel
    • Drawback: Stays damp longer after sweating

What to look for

QuestionIn briefWhy
Which fabric? In briefUse before collar shapeWhyA collar does not turn cotton into technical fabric. Read the composition and drying information.
Which cut?In briefMove arms and shouldersWhyThe hem should stay under a hip belt without bunching at the stomach. Tight sleeves should not pull on the upper arms.
Fits beneath a jacket? In briefCheck collars togetherWhyA stiff or thick polo collar can press beneath a closed jacket collar. Try it with your usual outer jacket.

Common questions

Is every piqué polo cotton?

No. Piqué describes the textured fabric surface. Quick-drying synthetic versions exist too. The composition tells you the fibre, rather than the word piqué.

Can I hike in a polo?

If material and cut suit the route. Quick drying helps on warm, demanding walks. Seams and collar must not rub unpleasantly beneath pack straps.

Does every polo collar protect the neck?

Only skin actually covered is beneath the fabric. Collar height and any explicit UV rating differ by model. The collar shape alone is not a protection specification.

How should I care for a technical polo?

Wash according to the care label. High heat and fabric softener do not suit every fabric. Let it dry before folding it back into your luggage.
