Merino or synthetic

According to Odlo, pure-wool merino base layers keep you warm and inhibit odour, but wick moisture slightly more slowly than synthetics. Those dry quickly, as with Active Warm. Performance Wool blends both.

Slim or Fitted

Odlo base layers come in Slim, meaning very close-fitting, or Fitted, a little looser. The closer they fit, the better they work. If you prefer a looser fit, Odlo recommends one size up. At Odlo, men's M means a 95.5 to 101.5 cm chest.

Washing merino properly

According to Odlo, wash merino by hand or on a delicate cycle, 30 °C max, with wool detergent. Dry flat, never wring. Often airing is enough. Synthetic base layers can take 40 °C; fabric softener harms both.

Frequently asked questions

What do Light, Warm and X-Warm mean?

This is how Odlo rates its base layers by warmth. In the Active range, Light is the lightweight version and Warm the mid-weight one. According to Odlo, Active X-Warm is also made for icy conditions.

Do Odlo jackets come up large?

A little, on purpose: according to Odlo, the jackets are cut looser so layers fit underneath. The X-alp 3L is generously cut. If you mostly wear just a base layer underneath, Odlo recommends one size smaller.

How do I combine the layers?

Odlo calls it the three-layer principle. The base layer wicks moisture away, the midlayer insulates, the outer layer keeps out wind and rain. For the midlayer, Odlo recommends wool or microfleece, not windproof material.

Can my down jacket go in the tumble dryer?

Yes. According to Odlo, at a low temperature with clean tennis or dryer balls, shaking it out in between. Wash it first with down detergent at 30 °C. Never store the jacket compressed afterwards.

Which sizes are there for children?

Odlo offers children's sizes from 56 to 164. Measure chest, waist and leg length and compare with the size chart. According to Odlo, one size up leaves room to grow into.
