Men's Coats & Parkas

A coat covers the hips and adds warmth at cold stops. For rain, check waterproofing and seams; for cycling, check the hem and freedom to pedal.

Key points

  • Choose insulation for waiting, not only for walking.
  • For rain, check waterproof fabric, seams and hood.
  • A hem below the hips covers more; try sitting and pedalling.

What to look for when buying

QuestionIn briefWhy
How warm?In briefMatch filling to your stopsWhyLong waits need more insulation than a brisk walk. No single temperature rating covers everyone.
How long?In briefCover the hips without restrictionWhySit and lean forwards. The hem should cover your back without stopping you climbing stairs or pedalling.
How much rain?In briefCheck fabric and seamsWhyFor a longer wet commute, water repellency alone is not enough. Check the waterproof construction.
Which hood?In briefSecure fit and clear viewWhyTurn your head with the hood up. It should stay in place without hiding traffic from view.

Frequently asked questions

Coat or short jacket?

A coat covers more of your hips and thighs at a stop. For frequent cycling or active walks, check whether the extra length restricts movement.

Is a down coat waterproof?

Not automatically. Down describes the insulation. Rain protection depends on the outer fabric, seams and construction; check the individual model.

What helps on the bike?

Try the coat while leaning forwards and lifting your knees. A two-way zip can free the lower hem, but is not a substitute for a suitable cut.

How much room should I leave?

Try the coat over your usual warm layer. Move your arms, sit down and close the collar. The chest should not pull and the sleeves should still cover your wrists.
