Men’s Freeski Jackets

A freeski jacket is usually an unlined hardshell. It keeps snow out, leaves room for layers underneath and stays over your waistband when you crouch or fall.

Key points

  • For powder: three-layer shell, fully taped seams, snow skirt, helmet-compatible hood.
  • Longer and roomier than a piste jacket, so a midlayer fits underneath.
  • Underarm vents matter as soon as you skin up for a run.
  • Raise your arms when trying it on: the hem should still cover your waistband.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
Two or three layers? In shortThree for off-pisteWhyIn a three-layer shell the membrane is bonded between face fabric and inner layer. That is tougher and packs smaller than a two-layer jacket with a loose liner.
How waterproof? In short20,000 mm or moreWhyKneeling and sitting in deep snow press water into the fabric. Check that every seam is taped, not just the main ones.
Which size?In shortTry it with a midlayerWhyWear the midlayer you ski in. Reach forward as if planting a pole, then overhead: sleeves stay at the wrist, the hem stays over the waistband.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from a piste jacket?

Freeski jackets are usually unlined, longer and cut roomier. They keep more water out and vent more on the way up. Warmth comes from the midlayer underneath.

How do I keep the membrane working?

Wash it as the label says with a technical detergent and no fabric softener. If water stops beading, gentle heat in the dryer or a proofing spray often helps, if the label allows.

Can the jacket attach to my trousers?

Some brands offer poppers or loops that link the snow skirt to the trousers. It usually only works within the same brand.

Does the hood need to fit over a helmet?

Off-piste, yes. Without a helmet it should cinch down tight, otherwise it flaps and blocks your view to the side.
