A day ski touring

From the car park in Tulfes up the Glungezer and back down. What matters is on your body, on your back and in your head.

  1. Glungezer, Tux Alps

A classic ski tour above Hall in Tirol: by lift to Tulfein, on skins to the Glungezer hut and the summit, on skis back to Tulfes.

  2. Early at the car park

In Tulfes the group check comes first: every transceiver transmits, one searches and finds all the others. Shovel and probe sit in their own compartment.

  3. Climbing from Tulfein

From 2,035 metres you go on under your own steam, along the ski road to the Tulfeinjöchl and up the north-east ridge to the Glungezer hut.

  4. Summit in the wind

At 2,677 metres the jacket gets turned inside out. Below lies the Inn valley, across from you the Karwendel.

  5. The descent

Carry the skis a short way, then click in: down beside the skin track and over the pistes to Tulfes.

  6. The moment

Imagine a slope breaking away. Then what you have practised is what counts. This is no substitute for an avalanche course.

  7. Back down

A good day in the mountains is one after which everyone is back down.

Do the tour yourself

The tour starts at the Glungezerbahn valley station in Tulfes, above Hall in Tirol. Two lift sections take you via Halsmarter to Tulfein at 2,035 metres. From there the classic route runs alongside the piste towards the Schartenkogel and up the north-east ridge to the Glungezer hut at 2,610 metres. The summit is about 60 metres higher. The Glungezerbahn reckons on 1.5 to 2 hours of climbing and about 650 metres of ascent; the Alpenverein section in Hall in Tirol rates the tour as easy.

From the shepherd's hut onwards you are outside the ski area. Check the avalanche bulletin first and carry the emergency kit: transceiver, shovel, probe and first aid kit. The descent runs back beside the skin track and over the pistes to Tulfes.
