Kids' Ski Touring Jackets

On a ski tour, kids sweat on the climb and cool down quickly on breaks. The jacket keeps out wind and snow; the warmth comes from the fleece and the insulated jacket.

Key points

  • Waterproof with vents, or a softshell on dry, settled days.
  • Size by height in cm, with room for a fleece underneath.
  • Tough fabric on shoulders and sleeves, where skins, edges and the pack rub.
  • Up to age seven, no cords at hood or collar, in line with EN 14682.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
Hardshell or softshell? In shortTour and weather decideWhyA softshell stretches and lets vapour out well but only keeps off light snow. For tours with breaks in the wind, a hardshell is the safer choice.
Which size?In shortTry it with a fleeceWhyPut the fleece on underneath and have your child raise their arms and squat. The back stays covered and the sleeves reach the wrists.
Does it grow with them?In shortSometimesWhySome kids' jackets let you extend the sleeves by a few centimetres. Otherwise Velcro cuffs can be tightened while the jacket is still big.
Pockets and zips?In shortBig and easy to gripWhyWith gloves on, kids need large zip pulls. A chest pocket keeps tissues and a snack bar within reach, even with a pack on.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need a membrane jacket?

For short tours in settled weather, a softshell or their ski jacket is often enough. Off-piste, with breaks in the wind, a hardshell protects better. Padded ski jackets are usually too warm on the climb.

What goes underneath?

A merino or synthetic base layer, plus a thin fleece when it's cold. No cotton, as it stays wet. Pack an insulated jacket for the top and spare gloves.

Why does my child get cold so fast at the top?

Because they stop while sweaty. Straight after arriving: insulated jacket over the shell, hat on, dry gloves. Kids often notice the cold only once they're already freezing.

How do I wash the jacket?

Dirt and sun cream clog the membrane, so wash it fairly often: technical detergent, no softener. If water stops beading, gentle heat as the label allows or a spray-on proofer helps.
