Kids’ Freeski Jackets

Kids kneel, sit and tumble in deep snow far more than adults. So seams and hem need to keep the snow out, and the jacket mustn't ride up while they play.

Key points

  • Size by height in cm, one size up for a midlayer and some growing room.
  • For powder: 20,000 mm or more, fully taped seams and a snow skirt.
  • EN 14682: no cords at hood or neck up to age seven, none with loose ends after that.
  • Off-piste, kids ride only with adults who know the terrain and the avalanche risk.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
How much bigger to buy?In shortOne sizeWhyOne size up leaves room for a midlayer and a season of growth. Much bigger, and the sleeves slide over the gloves and let snow in.
Shell or insulated? In shortInsulated for cold kidsWhyA shell is more versatile but relies on the right layers underneath. Children who get cold on the lift often do better in a lightly insulated jacket.
How waterproof? In short20,000 mm for powderWhyKneeling and sitting press snow into the fabric. On the piste 10,000 mm is usually enough; for powder and wet snow go higher, with sealed seams.
Anything for growing kids?In shortExtendable sleevesWhySome kids' jackets have sleeves that let out a little. If the description mentions it, the jacket will often fit for another season.

Frequently asked questions

Won't an ordinary ski jacket do?

For the piste and the odd powder slope, yes. A freeski jacket pays off if your child spends a lot of time in the park or off the groomers: it is cut longer, moves more freely and keeps snow out better.

Does the hood fit over a helmet?

Try it with the helmet on. A helmet-compatible hood pulls over without blocking the view to the side. A hood never belongs under the helmet.

How do I wash it?

Follow the care label: technical detergent, no fabric softener, zips closed. Once water stops beading, a proofing product refreshes the finish.

What should my child wear underneath?

A base layer and a fleece or thin insulated jacket. At the break, feel the back of their neck: damp means too warm, cool means add a layer.
