Climbing trousers

Indoors, stretch through the seat counts; on rock, a fabric that can take abrasion.

Guide

Climbing trousers

High steps and wide moves reveal the fit. Check freedom of movement and the waistband beneath your harness first, then choose fabric for the wall or the crag.

Key points

  • Lift a knee and squat: fabric should not hold you back at the crotch.
  • The waistband and pockets should lie flat beneath a harness.
  • Choose tougher fabric for rock contact and lighter designs for heat.

Frequently asked questions

Is any stretch trouser suitable?

Stretch alone is not enough. The cut, waistband and leg room must allow high steps. Check the fit with your harness and the rock contact you expect.

Do I need a gusset?

A gusset can add room at the crotch. It is a construction feature rather than a fit guarantee. What matters is whether you can move without pulling.

Cotton or synthetic?

Cotton blends are often used indoors. For outdoor climbing in changing weather, faster-drying technical fabric may be useful. The actual blend and thickness matter more than the fibre name alone.

Which pockets are useful?

Some pockets become inaccessible beneath a harness. Use suitable secure pockets for small items: loose objects can fall out while climbing.
