Guide
Women's Ski Hats
A hat under your ski helmet mustn't change how the helmet sits, and nor should a high ponytail. Without a helmet, choose by the wind and by how much you sweat.
Key points
- With a helmet: a thin hat, no bobble, ponytail low. Try the helmet on with it.
- Headbands and hats with a ponytail opening leave room for long hair.
- Without a helmet: dense knit with fleece lining, or a windproof layer over the ears.
- Women's hats often run slightly smaller. Compare the head circumference.

What to look for
| Question | In short | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Will it fit under my helmet? | In shortOnly if thin and smooth | WhyA ski helmet certified to EN 1077 only protects if it sits firmly. A bobble, bulky seams or a high ponytail lift it. Try everything on together. |
| Where does long hair go? | In shortPonytail hole or headband | WhySome hats have an opening at the back for a ponytail. A headband leaves the top of your head free and still keeps forehead and ears warm. |
| Merino or synthetic? | In shortMerino stays warm damp | WhyMerino picks up less odour, which helps over several ski days in a row. Synthetics dry faster if you sweat a lot. |
| Which size? | In shortMeasure your head | WhyRun a tape round your forehead and the back of your head, just above the ears. Women's hats often run slightly smaller than unisex ones. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a ponytail under a ski helmet?
Low at the neck, usually yes. Worn high, it presses against the adjustment dial and pushes the helmet forward. A low plait lies flattest. Readjust the helmet afterwards.
Do I need a hat under my helmet?
No, ski helmets are padded. In hard frost a thin hat or balaclava helps. Afterwards the helmet shouldn't wobble or pinch when you shake your head.
Which is warmer on the lift: headband or hat?
The hat, because it covers the top of your head. A headband is made for moving: touring, cross-country or mild days when you'd sweat under a hat.
How do I care for knit hats?
Wash on a wool or hand-wash cycle as the label says, and take the bobble off first if it unpops. Dry flat, or the knit stretches out.
