Windproof or waterproof, it has to fit bent over the bars: at the shoulders and the hips.

Women's Cycling Jackets

Women's cycling jackets are usually narrower at the shoulder and fuller at the hip. If that cut does not suit you, try a unisex one. All that counts is how it sits on the bike.

Key points

  • Windproof for descents and cold mornings, a membrane jacket for rain.
  • Leaning over the bars, your back stays covered and sleeves end past the wrist.
  • Nothing should pull at the hip, or the jacket rides up as you pedal.
  • Size by chest, waist and hip. Charts differ from brand to brand.
  • Commuting in the dark: reflective detail on the back and sleeves.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
Which size?In shortChest, waist, hipWhyMeasure all three and check the brand's chart. If you fall between sizes, think about whether a fleece needs to fit underneath.
Women's or unisex cut?In shortTry bothWhyWomen's cuts tend to be narrower at the shoulder and fuller at the hip. With broad shoulders or long arms, a unisex cut sometimes fits better.
Will a windproof keep rain out?In shortOnly brief showersWhyWindproofs are light and shower-resistant but will not cope with steady rain. For that you need a membrane and taped seams.
How do I vent on a climb? In shortUse the zipsWhyA two-way front zip or underarm vents let heat escape, so you can keep the jacket on uphill.

Frequently asked questions

How do I wash my rain jacket?

As the care label says, usually with liquid detergent and no fabric softener. Close all zips first. Once water stops beading on the surface, a wash-in or spray-on proofer restores the finish.

Do I need a hood?

A thick hood gets in the way under a helmet. That is why many cycling jackets have none, or one that goes over the helmet. Handy for the commute, rarely needed on a road bike.

What if the jacket rides up at the hip?

It is too tight or too short there. A hem with a silicone gripper or a drawcord keeps it down. When trying it on, lean forward and check it still covers your waistband.

How warm should I dress in winter?

Set off feeling slightly cool; you warm up quickly once pedalling. Wear a base layer, plus a midlayer in frost. Hands, ears and feet get cold first, so give them their own protection.

Gilet or jacket?

A gilet covers chest and stomach and leaves the arms free. It suits fresh summer mornings and long descents. When your arms feel the cold, switch to a jacket or add arm warmers.
