Ski Clothing

Dress for skiing in three layers: a base layer that moves sweat off your skin, a mid-layer for warmth, and a ski jacket and ski trousers that keep snow and wind out.

Key points

  • Three layers: base layer, mid-layer, jacket and trousers.
  • On the piste, a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head is enough.
  • No cotton next to the skin: it holds moisture.

What to look for when buying

QuestionIn briefWhy
How many layers do I need for skiing? In briefThree layersWhyThree: a base layer next to the skin, a fleece or wool mid-layer, then ski jacket and trousers.
What hydrostatic head do ski jacket and trousers need?In brief10,000 mmWhy10,000 mm is the usual figure for piste skiing. For powder, wet snow or sleet, look for 20,000 mm. It is measured to EN ISO 811.
Merino or synthetic next to the skin?In briefNever cottonWhySynthetics wick sweat reliably and dry fast. Merino wool still insulates when damp and stays fresh over several days. Cotton soaks up moisture without passing it on.

Frequently asked questions

What do I wear under ski trousers?

Long base-layer bottoms in synthetic fabric or merino. Three-quarter length is practical: it ends above the ski boot, so only the sock sits inside the cuff and nothing bunches. Skip jeans and cotton leggings, which hold moisture.

Should I wear two pairs of ski socks?

No, one pair. Ski socks reach just below the knee and should sit without creases. Manufacturers warn that socks that are too thick can restrict blood flow, while oversized ones wrinkle and cause pressure points.

How do I wash ski clothing?

Follow the care label. For Gore-Tex jackets and trousers the manufacturer gives 40 °C, a little liquid detergent and no fabric conditioner, then 20 minutes in the tumble dryer to revive the durable water repellent (DWR) finish.

What should I look for in children's ski clothing?

Size, hood and hands. Buy by height in centimetres. Under EN 14682, clothing for children up to 7 years (up to 134 cm tall) has no cords at the hood or neck. Mittens are warmer than gloves, and a one-piece snow suit keeps snow off the back.
