Founded in Sheffield in 1981 as a sleeping bag workshop: now down jackets like Microlight, hardshells like Firewall, plus insulated jackets.

What cuin means

The number before cuin is the fill power of the down. The higher it is, the more warmth for the same weight. Microlight and Valiance have 700 cuin, Electron Pro and Neutrino Pro 800 cuin. According to Rab, all its down up to 900 cuin is given a hydrophobic treatment.

Pertex: Quantum or Shield

Pertex Quantum is the light, windproof outer fabric of the Microlight. The Pro models use the more robust Quantum Pro, which according to Rab also stands up to light rain. Pertex Shield is waterproof and is used in Firewall and Valiance.

Finding the right size

Rab's size chart gives body measurements, not jacket measurements. Men's M fits a 102 cm chest. Women's models often come in UK sizes; UK 12 corresponds to M with a 94 cm chest. Rab cuts jackets for extreme cold slightly roomier so that thick layers fit underneath.

We Are Rab: The Mountain People

The brand film, just over two minutes long, is about the people who design, sew and wear Rab gear. According to Rab, the inspiration still comes from the mountains and the friendships made there.

Frequently asked questions

Microlight or Microlight Alpine?

The Alpine has an adjustable, down-filled hood. The Microlight Jacket comes without a hood but has a high collar. Both have the same fill and the same outer fabric.

Electron Pro or Neutrino Pro?

The Neutrino Pro is warmer: a men's size M contains 212 grams of down, the Electron Pro 179 grams. According to Rab, it is designed for winter mountaineering, the Electron Pro for climbing, winter hikes and belaying in the shoulder seasons.

My down jacket is losing feathers. Is that normal?

According to Rab, yes, especially in the first month. Rab uses a mix of down and feathers, and feather quills can poke through the fabric or seams. Don't pull them out; pull them back in from the inside. Otherwise the hole gets bigger.

The down has clumped after washing. What should I do?

According to Rab, the jacket isn't damaged; the down just hasn't dried properly. Gently pull the baffles apart, break up the clumps and put the jacket in the tumble dryer again.

My jacket has a defect. What should I do?

Write to our customer service. According to Rab, if you bought from a retailer, you should contact the retailer first, which means us. Rab repairs damage not covered by its guarantee at its own Service Centre for a fee.
