Wide, narrow or standard
At Lowa, standard is the last for medium-width feet. A W at the end of the model name stands for wide, which according to Lowa is for broad feet or hallux valgus. S means narrow, Ws the women's model. Not every model is available in all widths.
A new sole, not new shoes
Lowa resoles cement-lasted models such as the Camino and Explorer in its own repair service. That is not possible with injection-moulded soles. According to Lowa, a shoe with a GORE-TEX lining may no longer be waterproof afterwards.
Finding the right size
Lowa's size chart uses UK and EU sizes, which is why there are in-between sizes such as 41.5 or 42.5. For each size, the chart gives a foot length, such as 265 mm for EU 42. Measure your foot and compare.
Frequently asked questions
What do GTX and LL in the name mean?
GTX stands for a GORE-TEX lining that keeps water out and lets sweat escape as vapour. LL stands for leather lining. These models have no GORE-TEX.
Lo or Mid: what's the difference?
Lo is the low-cut shoe; Mid comes up over the ankle and gives more support there. On the Renegade, the shaft measures 115 mm on the outside on the Lo and 150 mm on the Mid.
Do GORE-TEX shoes need care?
Yes. The lining sits on the inside; the leather or textile on the outside still needs cleaning and waterproofing. According to Lowa, waterproofing lasts around three weeks.
How do I dry wet shoes?
Take out the laces and insole, stuff newspaper into the toe and let them dry at room temperature. Never on a radiator: wet leather can crack in the heat.
My new shoe has a defect. What should I do?

The Renegade has been around since 1997, now as the Renegade EVO. It suits day hikes up to light trekking and comes in low and ankle-high versions, also in wide and narrow fits.
Maddox Pro
