What the number tells you

The number in the name is the fabric weight in g/m², a guide to warmth. According to Löffler, Light 100 and Merino Light 130 suit the whole year, Warm 180 and Merino 200 temperatures around freezing. In real cold, choose Warm 220 or Merino 260.

Löffler's numeric sizes

Löffler uses numeric sizes. Men's 50 is M, for a 100 to 103 cm chest and 90 to 93 cm waist. Women's 38 fits an 88 to 91 cm chest and 72 to 75 cm waist. Trousers like Alaska also come in short and long sizes: men's 50 goes with 25 (M short) and 98 (M long).

Frequently asked questions

Does Löffler run small?

Löffler states the fit of every piece, from Tight Fit, close to the body, to Comfort Fit, straight and loose. For some sporty, close-fitting models, such as the Athletico hybrid jacket or the PL60 vest, it adds: tends to run small, if in doubt go one size up.

What do ASW, TIV and WPM mean?

The abbreviations name the material. ASW is Active Stretch Warm: stretchy, brushed on the inside, wind-resistant and slightly water-repellent. TIV stands for Thermo-Innenvelours, a stretchy knit with a brushed inner face. WPM is Löffler's own brand for waterproof and windproof fabrics with a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head.

Transtex or pure merino wool?

According to Löffler, it depends on your pace. Polypropylene absorbs practically no water, so Transtex suits you if you sweat a lot, for example when skate skiing. Löffler recommends pure merino wool such as Merino Light 130 for a steady pace, long breaks and multi-day tours.

How should I wash base layers?

Often, with just a little liquid detergent, advises Löffler, inside out and without fabric softener. Never leave wet laundry lying around. A tumble dryer is usually unnecessary, as the fabrics dry quickly in the air. The maximum temperature is on the care label.

How do I refresh the water-repellent finish?

With heat, says Löffler: after drying, another 20 minutes in the tumble dryer on a low setting, or iron it with a cloth in between. If the finish wears off after a long time, Löffler recommends a reproofing spray rather than a wash-in proofer.
