Warmth from 1 to 8

Hestra rates its models from 1 to 8 for warmth, mobility and durability. The Heli Ski scores warmth 6 and mobility 6. The Extreme Mitt has warmth 8 but only mobility 1, according to Hestra for biting cold and little movement.

Czone or Gore-Tex

According to Hestra, both are waterproof, breathable membranes; Czone is Hestra's own. The Army Leather Gore-Tex has one, the Heli Ski does not. Its polyamide is weather-resistant but not designed to keep your hands dry in prolonged wet conditions.

Measuring your glove size

Measure the circumference of your hand just below the knuckles, without the thumb, and compare it with the model's size guide. Between two unisex sizes, Hestra usually recommends the larger one. Women's models are narrower: if you wear unisex size 7, take women's size 8.

Caring for leather sports gloves

What should you do when your leather sports gloves get dirty? Hestra gives the answer in this video on glove care, just over two minutes long.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 3-finger glove offer?

According to Hestra, a little more warmth than a 5-finger glove, plus good grip and control between thumb and index finger. The Heli Ski and the Army Leather Gore-Tex also come as 3-finger gloves.

How do the Heli Ski and Patrol differ?

According to Hestra, the Patrol follows the same basic recipe as the Heli Ski, with goat leather on the fingers and palm. But it fits under your jacket sleeve and has a neoprene cuff.

Can I change the lining?

According to Hestra, you swap the lining on the Heli Ski depending on temperature, moisture and activity. The Patrol and Extreme Mitt also have a removable lining. Choose liner, base glove and shell glove in the same size.

Do leather gloves stretch over time?

According to Hestra, sports gloves made of goat leather or cowhide hardly stretch, unlike the thin leathers in dress gloves. So buy them in the right size from the start, with a little air between hand and material. That air keeps you warm.

How often should I use leather balm?

The more often you wear the gloves, the more often you should use it, says Hestra. The balm keeps goat leather and cowhide supple, but it doesn't make them waterproof. Light leather turns darker with it, and it doesn't belong on dress gloves.
