Knowledge
What do you want to do in the mountains?
Hiking, ski touring and skiing place different demands on fit and features. Choose according to the described use. A high hydrostatic head does not automatically make a hiking jacket suitable as a ski shell.
Try the jacket on with your planned layers. Check freedom of movement, hem, sleeves and the hood with your helmet or headwear. Children need their own sizes and suitable model details.
What does hydrostatic head mean?
ISO 811 describes a hydrostatic test method for textiles. Hydrostatic head is a material value measured under specific test conditions. On its own, it says nothing about the seams, zips or fit of a complete jacket.
Only compare values measured using the same method and test conditions. Unknown conditions remain unknown. More millimetres do not guarantee how long you will stay dry outdoors.
EN 343 and the change in standards
According to DIN Media, DIN EN ISO 24232:2026-05 replaces DIN EN 343:2019-06 for protective clothing against rain. ISO 811:2018 remains the current hydrostatic test method.
An old EN 343 specification on a model does not thereby become a new certification. A hydrostatic-head value alone cannot be used to derive a class under the protective-clothing standard. The documented specification for the specific jacket remains decisive.
Read RET and MVTR separately
RET describes resistance to water-vapour transmission, while MVTR describes water-vapour transmission under specified conditions. They are different measurements. Do not convert one into the other.
MVTR specifications from different methods are not a shared ranking either. ISO 11092:2026 has replaced the 2014 edition; an older documented model specification retains its original test reference. Without the method, a numerical comparison is not reliable.
What do the layers mean?
Layers describe the material construction. A three-layer construction combines the outer fabric, membrane and inner protective layer. The number of layers alone is not a complete ranking of waterproofness or comfort.
Check seams and fastenings separately. A water-repellent surface treatment does not prove that the whole jacket is waterproof. A material name alone does not tell you how it is constructed.
Ventilation and care
Additional vents can help release warm, moist air. A general breathability rating does not prove that underarm zips are present. Physical exertion and weather also affect how it feels to wear.
Follow the care instructions for the specific jacket. Dirt, moisture on the outer fabric and wear affect how it performs. A care recommendation is not a guarantee of lasting waterproofness.
How can you recognise a reliable recommendation?
The model generation, manufacturer’s information and test reference must match. Missing required information remains visible and prevents a Best Choice. The price preview shows the current range for the suitable selection.
Only compare differences that are actually supported by evidence. An unknown water column is not estimated, and a high fabric rating does not replace evidence for the jacket as a whole.
Frequently asked questions
Why are technical values missing for some models?
We only include details clearly confirmed for the specific model. If the link is unclear or sources conflict, the detail remains open. This prevents a model being marked as the best choice when the value is required for your answers.
