Three routes
Which route is yours?
Freeride, ski touring, mountain tour: Ortovox makes dedicated packs for each route. Here is what the three routes look like.
Your routeThe other routesFree Rider · Tour Rider
Lift up, off-piste down
Freeride
- The pack needs to stay close to your body through fast turns; the Free Rider stays put with its flat, elastic hip belt.
- Keep your shovel and probe within easy reach in the safety compartment, not under your jacket.
Your routeThe other routesVenet Tour · Haute Route
up with skins
Ski touring
- On the ascent, a stable, close-fitting back matters. Venet Tour and Haute Route are built for this.
- Around 30 litres is enough for a day tour; for a hut trip or traverse, go for 38 to 40.
Your routeThe other routesTraverse · Peak
ascent, via ferrata, summit
Hiking & mountaineering
- The Traverse comes with a rain cover, while the Peak has a crampon compartment for high-alpine tours.
- For multi-day hut trips, choose 38 litres or more.

The right back length
Measure your back length from the top of your hip bones along your back to the neck vertebra that protrudes noticeably when you bend your head forwards. Ortovox recommends S for 36 to 44 cm and Standard for 42 to 50 cm.
If you are between 42 and 44 cm, both fit. In that case, check where the hip belt sits: on your hip bones, not above them.
Safety compartment and ski carry
- The safety compartment keeps your shovel and probe separate from the rest and quick to reach.
- You carry your skis diagonally (D-Skifix) on steep climbs and at the side (A-Skifix) on long routes.
- Venet Tour holds skis up to 120 mm wide; Haute Route, Tour Rider and Cross Rider up to 150 mm.
Frequently asked questions
What does S mean at Ortovox?
S means a shorter back length. According to Ortovox, it fits a back length of 36 to 44 cm, with narrower, shorter shoulder straps and shorter hip fins. It isn’t a women’s-only model, but is designed for anyone with a shorter back.
How do I measure my back length?
Tilt your head slightly forwards and feel for the neck vertebra that sticks out furthest. Place the tape measure at the top of your hip bones and measure along your back up to this vertebra. It’s easiest with someone else’s help.
Will an avalanche airbag fit in these packs?
No, these are backpacks without an airbag. Ortovox builds the airbag into its own backpacks, the Avabag Litric. You’ll find those in the avalanche transceiver finder.
Do I need a safety compartment for freeriding?
Off-piste, an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel are always essential. The safety compartment stores the probe and shovel separately, ready to grab quickly.
