How big should a backpack be for your commute?
20 to 25 litres is usually enough for a laptop, lunch and a jacket. If you carry a change of clothes or sports gear, 24 to 30 litres is a better fit; larger backpacks can quickly feel cumbersome on a full bus or bike.
Will my laptop fit the compartment?
Laptops are named by their screen diagonal in inches. A 15.6-inch compartment fits most 15-inch devices; for 16 and 17 inches, you need a compartment with that exact specification. If no screen size is given, the only option is to measure: compare the device's width and height with the compartment's dimensions.
Waterproof or rain cover?
A waterproof backpack, such as a rolltop, also keeps out longer periods of rain. Most urban backpacks are water-repellent: a shower beads off, but prolonged rain gets in through seams and zips. A rain cover provides extra protection, including when cycling.

How many litres does a backpack need for a laptop and a change of clothes?

What’s the difference between water-repellent and waterproof?
Water-repellent means drops bead off the surface. Waterproof means the material and construction keep water out even in prolonged rain; backpacks usually achieve this with welded seams and a roll-top.
Do I need reflectors on my backpack when cycling?
Reflective details make you visible to others sooner in the dark. They don’t replace a light on your bike, but they’re especially helpful on your commute in winter.
