How many litres do you need?
15 to 30 litres is usually enough for a day tour. If you’re sleeping in huts, add spare clothes and a hut sleeping bag and you’ll need 30 to 45 litres. With a tent, sleeping mat and stove, start at 50 litres. When in doubt, choose the smaller one: if there’s space, you’ll fill it.
How do you measure your back length?
Measure from the prominent vertebra at the base of your neck to the level of your hip bones. Tilt your head forwards to feel the vertebra. Get someone to help you measure; on your own, it’s easy to measure at an angle. The measurement is only partly related to your height.
Many models come in two back lengths, while some can be adjusted. If you’re between sizes, an adjustable carry system is the safer choice.
Mesh back or close-fitting back?
A mesh back holds the pack away from you, allowing air to flow through. The load therefore sits slightly further from your body. A close-fitting back carries heavy loads more steadily and suits steep terrain, but gets damp faster in warm weather.
Do you need a women's model?
Women's models usually have a shorter back, differently shaped shoulder straps and a more angled hip belt. This helps many women, but it isn’t essential. Choose what fits you, even from the other range.
How do you check the fit?
- Pack it with real weight, not air.
- Fasten the hip belt first. It sits on your hip bones and carries most of the load.
- Then adjust the shoulder straps. They should sit close without pressing.
- Pull the load-lifter straps until the load moves towards your body.
- Keep heavy items close to your back, roughly at shoulder-blade height.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a hiking backpack and a trekking backpack?
Mainly volume and carrying system. Hiking backpacks usually hold up to around 45 litres and stay light. Trekking backpacks start at 50 litres and have a carrying system for heavy loads, with a stable frame and wide hip belt.
Do I need a rain cover?
In the mountains, it’s almost always worth having one, as hardly any backpack is waterproof on its own. Some models have one built in. The backpack listing will say if one is included.
How heavy can my backpack be?
It depends on your body, training and route, so there’s no fixed number that suits everyone. Also check the backpack’s own weight: daypacks often weigh around a kilo, while large trekking models weigh well over two.
Which backpack is right for children?
One with a short back and the right volume, usually 10 to 20 litres. Buy for their current size, not for them to grow into, and only pack as much as your child is happy to carry.
