Ski Boots for the Piste

On the piste you're in your boots all day. They should hold the heel without squeezing the forefoot, and be only as stiff as you ski. A boot that is too stiff makes every turn hard work.

Key points

  • Mondopoint is foot length in cm. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
  • Wide feet: a last from 102 mm. Narrow feet: up to 98 mm.
  • Pick flex for your ability and weight; compare numbers within one brand only.
  • Try boots on with one pair of thin ski socks, ideally in the afternoon.
  • Sole and binding have to match.

Buying advice

Which ski boot suits you?

Five questions on who the boot is for, terrain, ability, foot width and budget narrow the choice. A fitting and binding check are still needed.

What to look for

QuestionIn shortWhy
Which size?In shortMeasure MondopointWhyMeasure standing, heel against the wall. The Mondopoint number is the length in cm: 27.5 means 27.5 cm.
Does the shell fit?In shortCheck the empty shellWhyTake the liner out and slide your toes to the front: one to two fingers should fit behind the heel. Any more usually means the boot is too big.
Which flex?In shortAs stiff as you skiWhySoft boots forgive mistakes, stiff ones pass force straight to the ski. Flex is not standardised: a 100 feels slightly different from brand to brand.
Toes touching the front? In shortStanding yes, flexed noWhyStand upright and your toes brush the toe cap. Bend your knees into a skiing stance and they should pull back.
Will my binding fit?In shortCheck the sole standardWhyAlpine bindings are built for ISO 5355 soles. Boots with treaded walking soles need a binding approved for them. Have it set up by a ski shop.

Frequently asked questions

How long does breaking in take?

The liner settles over the first few ski days. If one spot still presses after that, a boot fitter can stretch the shell there.

Why do my feet get cold?

Often the boot is too tight or the buckles are cranked down, so less blood reaches your toes. Wear one pair of socks and loosen the buckles on the lift.

How do I dry ski boots?

Take the liners out and let them dry at room temperature, not on a radiator. A boot dryer on a low setting works too.

What's different about women's ski boots?

Makers usually give them a lower cuff flared for the calf, a narrower heel and a softer flex. Your foot is the guide, not the label.

Which buckle do I close first?

The one over the instep, so your heel settles back into the pocket. Then the upper buckles, the toe buckle last, and finally the power strap.
