Outdoor mugs and cups
A cup for a rucksack needs different features from one for a desk. Decide whether you will drink at camp or carry a hot drink on the move.
Key points
- Double walls insulate, while single-wall metal cups take up less space.
- A lid with a drinking opening may resist splashes without being leakproof.
- Collapsible cups and folding handles save packed space.
- Heat drinks only in explicitly approved single-wall vessels.
Where will you use your cup?
| Use | Choose | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee at camp | ChooseStable mug with a handle | Bear in mindA broad base and an easy grip help on uneven camping tables. |
| Hot drinks on the move | ChooseInsulated mug with a lid | Bear in mindCheck the exact closure's leakproof claim before packing it alongside clothing. |
| Trekking with little luggage | ChooseLight metal or collapsible cup | Bear in mindCompare packed dimensions and whether it fits inside your cooking pot. |
| Heating water | ChooseApproved single-wall metal vessel | Bear in mindThe handle and rim may become hot. Check the stated suitability for your stove. |
Pack smaller or keep drinks warm?
Collapsible cup (Compact packing)

A flexible wall folds flat for transport.
- Advantage: Very small when empty
- Drawback: Needs a secure surface
Insulated mug (Longer warmth)

An insulating wall slows the cooling of a hot drink.
- Advantage: Retains warmth longer
- Drawback: More bulk in the pack
What to look for
| Question | In brief | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Must it be leakproof? | In briefConsider how it travels | WhySplash protection may be enough on a table. A mug lying in a rucksack needs an explicitly leakproof closure. |
| Will it fit my luggage? | In briefCompare outer dimensions | WhyA large handle may need more space than the cup itself. Folding handles or walls make it easier to pack inside a pot. |
| How do I clean the lid? | In briefAccessible components | WhySeals and drinking mechanisms need cleaning as directed. Drink residue otherwise collects in hidden areas. |
Common questions
Can every metal mug go on a stove?
Use only a single-wall vessel specifically suitable for heating. Double-wall and vacuum-insulated mugs should not go over a flame. Coatings and handles must also suit the intended heat source.
Why does my coffee cool quickly?
A single wall releases heat readily. An insulated mug with a lid is better for keeping a drink warm; the result also depends on fill level and outdoor temperature.
Is every lid leakproof?
Read the exact closure description. An open drinking hole or simple sliding lid often mainly prevents splashes. Keep the filled mug upright if unsure.
What matters when drinking from titanium or steel?
The rim of a single-wall vessel can get very hot. Let the drink cool slightly and handle a hot mug only by suitable grips. Children should have help.

Small packed size
A collapsible wall or folding handles save space. Compare outside dimensions with your pot and pack the cup dry.
- Fold walls or handles
- Compare pot dimensions
- Pack it dry
Keep drinks warm
Insulation slows cooling. If the mug goes in your pack, check that the closure is explicitly described as leakproof.
- Insulated walls
- Suitable lid
- Check closure tightness
Around the stove
Single-wall metal vessels may suit heating when approved by the maker. Check the instructions and protect your hands from hot rims.
- Single-wall construction
- Check stove approval
- Beware of hot rims
At the campsite
A fixed handle is convenient at camp. Look for a steady base and consider how easy the material is to clean after tea or coffee.
